![]() The truth is that there will be many more entries in the John Wick universe, and Reeves could easily come back as a flashback, or a Force Ghost of some kind, so his potential return doesn’t mean Wick would still be alive. And director Chad Stahelski, while noting that he and Keanu Reeves are done with Wick for the moment, has said they might return. There’s no way Lionsgate is giving this property up, especially as it’s about to make a boatload of money. There are indeed spinoffs in the works for the John Wick franchise, including Ballerina, featuring Ana de Armas, and a prequel series showing the New York Continental Hotel’s early days. One could argue that dying (or “dying”) was the only way John could win, so maybe this was all part of his plan. But perhaps a set-up for a sequel or spinoff of some sort. It’s Akira (Rina Sawayama), whose father Caine killed earlier in the film. He holds a bouquet of flowers, which suggests that he will finally be able to let her know he’s there. We see Caine, now re-retired and supposedly free of all his obligations as a hired assassin, walking to listen to his violin-virtuoso daughter as she plays in a crowded outdoor plaza. Surely there’s an end-credits stinger showing us that John Wick is still alive? Maybe lunching with his new family in a café on the banks of the Arno, Bruce Wayne style? In fact, there is an end-credits scene, but it’s not what we expect. We see none of these things, and the credits finally start to roll. What’s next? A shadow in the distance watching them? A telltale mop-top quietly moving into frame? The dirt on the grave levitating mysteriously? No. And there’s a hint of it as we see the dog turning off-screen. Of course, scenes of people standing over the graves of heroes who didn’t actually die is a common motif in modern action cinema, so we keep waiting for that inevitable reveal. Then he too walks away, as the camera cranes up. Winston stays behind, touches John’s grave, and mutters, “Farewell, my son,” in Russian. The King chuckles to himself as he walks away. ![]() “I never thought I’d see the day,” the King says, before asking Winston if he thinks John is in Heaven or hell. “Loving Husband,” the gravestone reads, just as John himself had requested earlier in the film. After that, we cut to New York, with Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), along with John’s dog, standing over his grave, where he’s been buried next to his late wife, Helen. We do, in fact, see Wick, seriously wounded and bleeding after his literal pistols-at-dawn duel with Donnie Yen’s blind assassin, Caine (not to mention an entire night of getting shot, punched, kicked, and run over by seemingly everyone in Paris), keel over, lifeless, on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur basilica. We are recirculating it now that John Wick: Chapter 4 is available to own digitally. This piece was originally published in March. To enable the trailers on the client side, you just have to pop into the settings menu. That final shot and the end-credits stinger might be more closely connected than they appear. You might not want Plex for Windows, installed on your laptop, to play any trailers at all though, because you don’t want to deal with the buffering and waiting while you’re using your laptop to watch movies on a business trip. You may, for example, want the Plex client in your home theater to always play five trailers. While we were initially annoyed at this extra step, we actually appreciate it now: it gives you granular control over which of your Plex clients will load the trailers, which won’t, and how many trailers they’ll load. The absolute final step of the whole process is to tell your Plex clients to load the trailers (and how many you want loaded).

![]() The strongest is John Lennon’s “I Am the Walrus,” played by the fabs in hippie finery, furry coats and animal masks on a concrete airstrip. “Magical Mystery Tour” is full of enough shameless mugging, weak sight gags, go-nowhere setups and feeble fantasies to make “The Monkees” TV series look like the height of intellectual sophistication.įortunately, the five songs sprinkled throughout (in addition to the title tune) are strong enough to survive the pre-MTV treatment they receive. The slapdash, careless and badly improvised nature of the project is completely at odds with the Beatles reputation for meticulous studio craftsmanship when it came to making music. The band members also play a quartet of pointy-hatted wizards in a laboratory, and perform in costumes ranging from groovy psychedelic threads to natty white tuxedos. Shot with no script and sort-of directed by McCartney, the surrealistic exercise in self-indulgence features the four Beatles taking a bizarre bus trip with a bunch of Fellini-esque eccentrics and extras. Please understand my feelings about mac and cheese. Mac and cheese is an alternative when pain in the ass kids don’t want to eat the already prepared meal. People might eat stuffing as a side to pork chops and have roast turkey on a random March day but rarely put the two together and add cranberry and yams. ![]() These towns out in the desert – you know how they got there? People wanted to get away from something else.” His father (Brian Cox) provides the voiceover narration, evoking national origin myths: “We drive west, keep driving until we find a nice little town. In his imagination he heads west in his father’s Jeep Grand Wagoneer, American flag flying. In other words, as Monty recognises his own culpability in his downfall, there is a bold (particularly for 2002) suggestion that America too, can look to its own actions for answers.Ģ5th Hour’s allegory is strengthened in its second set piece, a fantasy sequence where Monty imagines going on the run rather than reporting to Otisville Prison. Staring at his allegorical self in the mirror he concludes: “No, fuck you Montgomery Brogan – you had it all in you threw it away.”Īs film scholar Guy Westwell has noted, 25th Hour shows how “activities in the past have played a role in shaping the circumstances of the present”. This scene takes on its full significance when Monty finally accepts blame. Monty stares into a bathroom mirror, seeing in the image of himself New York’s diverse multitudes – as well as his friends, father, partner, Osama bin Laden, George Bush and Dick Cheney – and he rants viciously at them all. This depiction of Monty is perhaps most suggestive in one of two stylised set pieces in the film: the “Fuck You” monologue. As they outline his grim destiny the camera pans menacingly down to the site of destruction, binding Monty’s story to the story of 9/11. In one striking scene in 25th Hour, Monty’s friends Francis (Barry Pepper) and Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman) discuss his fate while looking down at the floodlit excavation of Ground Zero. They also spoke to a burgeoning nationalism and xenophobia, as I’ve argued elsewhere. Without wider contexts, their “micro” approaches perpetuated this inward drift and chimed with other trends: a need for masculine heroes, commemoration, memorialisation and the need to work through trauma. Both World Trade Center and United 93 focused on the immediate emergencies of 9/11 and opted to ignore the associated geopolitics. The convergence of these issues partially explains the inward approaches of Stone and Greengrass – two of Hollywood’s most political directors. So there was a practical problem of filming something already seen as cinematic, but also an unsettling and traumatic intersection between reality and fiction.Ī further challenge for filmmakers has been locating a political position, given the context of the highly divisive War on Terror. Cultural theorist Slavoj Zizek famously wrote that the oft-repeated television images were “reminiscent of spectacular shots in catastrophe movies,” or “special effect which outdid all others”. That the attacks were seen as profoundly “cinematic”, for example. This practice of attaching too much singular importance to the attacks is easy to identify in retrospect, but was harder in the earlier aftermath.Īdditionally, filmmakers faced more immediate challenges in depicting 9/11. ![]() These conceits have proven problematic as they tend to remove the attacks from their contexts, pre-histories and effects and have been used ideologically, to advance unilateral agendas – and a stubborn brand of American exceptionalism.Ĭinema, literature, art, commentary and scholarship – even work that critiques such notions – have often inadvertently perpetuated this idea of exceptionalism simply by placing yet more attention on 9/11. ![]() ![]() The narrative follows his final day of freedom: his world has changed irrevocably and he is suspicious of everyone.Ģ5th Hour is worthy of reappraisal for many reasons but I’d like to focus on how it handles an increasingly vexing aporia - the problem of meaningfully addressing the impact of 9/11 without reinforcing the notion that the attacks came “out of the blue” or “changed everything”. The film’s main character, Monty (Edward Norton), is a convicted drug dealer who has just been sentenced to seven years in jail. Unlike some high-profile releases – such as Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center or Paul Greengrass’s United 93, both released in 2006 – Spike Lee’s 25th Hour manages to capture the post-9/11 lassitude that was so acutely felt by Americans, while simultaneously delivering a trenchant political critique. In fact, while blockbusters such as Spiderman (2002) were hastily re-edited to remove images of the World Trade Centre, Lee made the attacks fundamental to 25th Hour, building in extended shots of Ground Zero and the Tribute in Light to pivotal moments in the film. Spike Lee’s 25th Hour, released in 2002, was mostly shot during the summer of 2001 and was reworked following 9/11. The most enduring cinematic representation of 9/11 was not originally meant to be about the World Trade Centre attacks at all. |
